Karuizawa Family Photography - Ang Family

Sean & Angela were guests at a wedding I was photographing in Karuizawa, Japan. There’s something wonderful about seeing familiar faces at weddings — in a place far from home, it feels like running into old friends in a foreign city.

The morning after the wedding, I made my way up to Hotel Harvest Karuizawa, where they were staying. Instead of venturing out into town, we decided to linger and explore the hotel grounds. Karuizawa has a quiet kind of beauty — unassuming, spacious, and gentle. The air felt lighter there.

Halfway through our walk, the sprinklers suddenly came to life.

What could have been an interruption became a gift. Water catching the light, laughter spilling out unexpectedly, shoes dampened without a second thought. It was the kind of unscripted moment that can’t be planned — a little magic, a little whimsy — exactly what the morning called for.

Sometimes the best photographs aren’t made by grand locations or elaborate plans. Sometimes they’re found in the in-between.
