Melbourne Family Photographer
Natural & joyful family photography in Melbourne
for parents who want candid family photographs captured in a honest and heartfelt way
Jonathan Ong is a family photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. For the past 14 years, he has been drawn to the small, in-between moments — the laughter, connection and little bits of childhood that are so easy to miss. His approach is relaxed and patient, giving families space to play, connect and simply be themselves. Through his photographs, he hopes to hold onto the wonder of childhood and that familiar feeling of home.
Hi, I’m Jon
Hi, my name is Jonathan, but you can call me Jon.
The strange thing about parenthood is that you are always watching your children grow, and yet somehow it still happens before you are ready. One day they are a little taller, a little more independent, a little more themselves — and you wonder how it all went by so quickly.
My mum used to run a pre school, and I grew up helping her with the children. I’ve always loved being around kids, but becoming a father of two has made me understand family in a completely different way. The days can feel long, but the years really are short, and I’m constantly reminded how quickly these little seasons pass.
That’s what I hope to hold onto in my photographs — the everyday magic of family, the wonder of childhood and that feeling of home. The way your child reaches for your hand, climbs into your lap, laughs with you, or simply wants to be close. So that one day, when they are all grown up, you can look back and remember not just how they looked, but how this part of life felt.
Family Photography Sessions in Melbourne
I photograph relaxed, natural family sessions across Melbourne and Victoria, including newborns, maternity, extended families, birthdays and documentary-style family days. I keep things easygoing, with gentle direction when it helps and plenty of room for children to play, explore and simply be themselves.
For Families
Like Yours
Anxious about getting your family photographed? Choosing a family photographer is partly about the photographs, but also about having someone who understands your family and gives your children space to be themselves. When everyone feels comfortable, the little moments tend to happen naturally.
Here are a few of the things the parents I photograph tend to value.
Parents who want the experience of a family photography session to be a positive one
“We had the most enjoyable family session with Jon, despite my reservations about how our three rambunctious kids would behave. Jon won them over with his easygoing nature and patient attitude, and by the end my kids were asking when we were going to see Uncle Jon again. Cannot thank Jon enough for the gift of these moments, images of our family as we are - joyful captures I will treasure forever.”

Parents who want natural, candid photos
instead of overly posed ones
“Jon has a gift of capturing the essence of family life effortlessly. he is always able to put the kids (and even the most camera shy adults) at ease, to give us the most natural family photos to treasure. Our family sessions with Jon are more than just photos, but are a snapshot in time of a priceless season when the kids are little.”
- The Cheang Family
Parents who want this season of life
to be captured in an honest and heartfelt way
“Jon has an incredible eye for seeing all the small everyday moments in life, and capturing them beautifully. As a parent, I could appreciate the intentional approach he took to connecting with my busy 2 and 4 year old kids and the photographs show their natural expressions. As a fellow photographer, I could appreciate his immense skill at capturing moving toddlers and I was blown away by how many amazing shots he captured. I admire Jon's ability to see creative compositions and capture glowy light - you can really feel the moment in his photographs.”

Awards & Recognition
Family photography has always been close to my heart, and even more so since becoming a father myself. I’m incredibly grateful to have been named one of Heartful Magazine’s Top 20 Family Photographers to Watch, and to have also been recognised as a winner at the Moonee Valley Quality Business Awards.
Why Families Choose Me
The best of both worlds
Growing up in an Asian family, I know how important it is to have a family portrait that the grandparents can proudly display on their wall. I still love making those photographs, but in a way that feels relaxed and natural, with everyone close together and looking like themselves.
I also love the unscripted moments that happen around them, the laughter, cheekiness and little exchanges that say so much about a family. There’s room for both in a session, a beautiful family portrait and all the candid moments that happen in between.
I’M GREAT WITH KIDS
I grew up helping at my mum’s pre school and now being a father of two, I've spent a good part of my life around children.
One of the things I value most is building a connection with your children. I take the time to help them feel comfortable with me, so they can relax, play and be themselves.
years of experience
With years of experience photographing weddings and families, I can spend less time thinking about the camera and more time noticing what’s happening in front of me.
I have developed the ability anticipate moments, adapt to changing light and work quickly when children are on the move. The technical side of photography has become second nature, allowing me to spend more time connecting with your family and making the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Kind Words
The photographs matter, but so does how it feels to be photographed as a family. I want the experience to feel relaxed and positive, with enough space for the little moments to happen naturally. Here are a few kind words from families who have trusted me to capture this fleeting precious season.

Family Photography FAQs
-
That’s completely fine, I work at your children’s pace and give them time to feel comfortable and be themselves. Some kids warm up straight away and others need a little longer. I’m happy to follow their lead rather than expecting them to behave a certain way for the camera.
-
Yes, I photograph families across Melbourne and regional Victoria. I also photograph sessions in Singapore once or twice a year — it gives me a chance to visit family, so I’m always happy to make the trip.

Your family session can take place at home, somewhere outdoors that means something to you, or at one of my favourite locations around Melbourne. Home sessions work well because children are already somewhere familiar, while outdoor sessions give them room to explore and play. If you’re unsure where to go, I can help choose somewhere that suits your family and your children’s ages.

I photograph newborns, maternity, birthdays, extended and multigenerational families, as well as documentary-style family days. Sessions can be at home or outdoors, depending on what feels right for your family.

Family photos can work well in Melbourne throughout the year, and the best season depends on the kind of session you’re drawn to. Spring and summer give us warmer days and longer evenings, while autumn and winter can suit softer light and cosier sessions. I can help you choose a season, location and time that works for your family.
-
We can reschedule if your child is sick, and I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice where possible. I have children myself, so I know how easily germs and viruses can suddenly change your plans.
-
If the forecast isn’t looking good, we can reschedule the session. I ask that we make the call at least 24 hours beforehand where possible, so I have time to adjust my schedule as well.
-
Session fees start from $450, with image collections chosen separately from $470. The session fee covers the photography session itself, and you can choose the collection that suits you afterwards. Get in touch and I’ll send you the full details on session options, collections and what’s included.

The best time is usually when your children are well rested and happiest, so I prefer to work around naps and their normal routine first. Once we know that, we can work out the location and timing that will suit the session.
Family Photography Resources
I’ve photographed families across Melbourne and Victoria over the last 14 years, and over that time I’ve learnt there are always a few things parents want to know before a session. Where to go, what to wear, how to prepare the kids, and what to expect on the day.
I’ve put together a collection of simple guides and recent family stories to help with all of that. They’re also a good way to see how different sessions can feel, from quiet mornings at home to afternoons outdoors with plenty of movement and play.
