Karuizawa Pre Wedding on 35mm Film - Colin & Kylie
Karuizawa is a small mountain town just an hour from Tokyo — and interestingly, it doesn’t feel very Japanese at all.
There’s a softness to it. Wide, tree-lined paths. European-style cottages. A quiet stillness that feels more alpine retreat than bustling Japan. It has long been a summer escape from the city, and you can sense that gentler rhythm the moment you arrive.
Because of that, it took me a few hours of driving to find corners that subtly hinted we were still in Japan. A vegetable farm tucked between mountains. An old wooden heritage home with its weathered beams and tiled roof. A quiet street lined with a simple Japanese storefront.
Sometimes you have to look a little harder for context. And sometimes, that search becomes part of the story itself.
